Phase Two - Improve the Present with Brain Chemistry Control

 

Emotions are the result of chemical reactions.

 

They can seem irrational when we’re experiencing them, but they’re based on two simple equations.

 

Negative stimuli prompt the release of stress chemicals like adrenaline and cortisol.

 

Positive stimuli prompt the release of feel-good chemicals like serotonin, oxytocin and endorphins.

 

Remember how the unconscious mind tries to keep you safe at all times?

 

This goes all the way to considering anything unfamiliar or uncomfortable to be a source of stress.

 

An argument with a stranger and narrowly avoiding a car crash create the same chemical reaction in the brain. The only difference is the amount of stress chemicals that are released.


When stress chemicals are released:

  • Your heart rate increases.
     
  • You breathe deeper and faster.
     
  • Glucose enters the bloodstream.
     
  • Your blood pressure temporarily spikes.
     
  • Blood drains from your prefrontal cortex to the back of the brain.

 

And while none of these are pleasant in the short term (or healthy in the long term), it’s the last point that has the biggest impact on your day-to-day life.

 

The prefrontal cortex is the brain’s control center. It’s responsible for planning, processing information, impulse control, problem solving, short-term memory and even speech.

 

So, if you’re stressed, you literally struggle to think straight!

 

(This is why you think of things you should have said or done only when you’re looking back on a stressful situation.)

 

The back of the brain, on the other hand, is where the unconscious mind lives.

 

The prioritization of the back of your brain over the prefrontal cortex leaves you open to the unconscious mind’s fight-or-flight reactions and black-or-white way of thinking.

 

Given enough time, this turns into a vicious feedback loop. You can’t think straight because you’re stressed, putting you in situations that lead to more stress.

 

Fortunately, feel-good chemicals have us covered.

 

Just as adrenaline and cortisol prepare you for action in fight-or-flight situations, the feel-good chemicals serotonin, oxytocin and endorphins act as your reward circuit.

 

  • They reduce stress.

  • They improve your decision-making.
     
  • They redirect blood flow to the prefrontal cortex.

Meet Your Instructors, Steve and Odille Remmert

Hi, it’s good to meet you :)

 

We’re the two-part team behind The Remmert Method.

 

Although we're happy, financially stable, and jointly running our thriving coaching business today, our lives weren’t always so bright.
